VIETNAMESE COURSE DESCRIPTION
The New York Vietnamese school (NYVS) one-year program consists of 2 terms. Each term will run for 4 months from September to April of the next year. We offer a Vietnamese language course for children (Elementary Vietnamese I) and for adults in two categories (Elementary Vietnamese I and Elementary Vietnamese II).
The primary goals of the NYVS are to ensure that each student will develop the ability to listen, understand, read and write the Vietnamese language as well as develop knowledge of Vietnamese culture and history.
Elementary Vietnamese I (children): 8-month program
This course is designed for students with little or no knowledge of Vietnamese. Students will learn greetings, the alphabet and basic reading, writing, speaking and listening skills, all with the focus on intonation and pronunciation. Students will learn how to read and write short paragraphs, carry out routine tasks, and participate in a simple conversation. This class will be taught in both Vietnamese and English.
Elementary Vietnamese I (Adult/Foreign): 8-month program
This course is designed for students with little or no knowledge of Vietnamese. Students will learn greetings, the alphabet, and basic reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. This course will emphasize correct pronunciation, spelling and sentence structure. After the first and second quarters, students are expected to carry on a basic conversation and write simple sentences in Vietnamese. This class will be taught primarily in English with some Vietnamese until the students are more comfortable with the Vietnamese language.
Elementary Vietnamese II (Adult): 8-month program
This course is intended for students with some basic working knowledge of Vietnamese. Students will learn standard Vietnamese and communication skills at a beginner level. Students will learn greetings, the alphabet, and basic reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. Students are also required to learn the phonetic systems, basic grammar, basic vocabulary reading, writing, speaking and listening to Vietnamese short stories. At the end of the program the students will be able to communicate on simple topics like greetings, self-introduction, school activities, and weather. This class will be taught in both Vietnamese and English.

Week __: 02/13 – No School (Valentine’s Day; TET ; Monday is President’s Day)
Week 4: 02/20
Week 5: 02/27 -Close early at 5:30 pm for Tet’s event in Flushing
Week 6: 03/06
Week 7: 03/13

Week __: 04/03: No School (Good Friday/Easter/Passover)
