Our Mission

Mission Letter

The School for Vietnamese Speaking is an educational program that promotes the preservation and continuation of Vietnamese language, culture, and traditions for today’s young Vietnamese-Americans. This is a collaborative effort between two groups of young Vietnamese professionals: the Vietnamese-American Community Association of New York and the Vietnamese Language & Cultural Meet-up Group. Our vision is to establish a center where Vietnamese language, culture, and community can thrive. Although we value our American identity, we also want to preserve our Vietnamese identity. As we strive to maintain the culture, traditions and identity of our Vietnamese ancestry, we feel that it is equally important to teach and handover these values to the younger Vietnamese-American generations so that they too will have pride in their heritage. After all, today’s youths will become tomorrow’s leaders. With a group of highly trained and experienced teachers and volunteers with backgrounds in teaching and administration, we are moving forward with the teaching program. Our 1-year program is divided into 3 quarters with each quarter lasting 3 months long. The classes are set for 2 hours sessions every Saturday. Children and adults are grouped separately and according to their learning levels. To distinguish the levels of proficiency in reading, writing and speaking, an assessment is given to students to assure proper class placement. We also see the need of having an ongoing citizenship class taught in Vietnamese. With the lack of citizenship classes, invariably those seeking assistance are sheltered and/or end up studying at home with books with audio to which they may not fully understand. Offering citizenship classes, we can provide the community a means to the assistance they need to become a full member of the USA successfully. Our opening date for the school is set for Saturday, January 12th, 2008. The staff has prepared the syllabus and lesson plans for the quarter. With advertising, promoting and campaigning in motion, we hope to have this school open as scheduled.
